I am fairly new to Exchange and I have several questions:

We have a consulting firm with only one server. This server is our primary
dompain controller, proxy server, web server and exchange (5.5) server. It
seems to work great for all of these. I have a question about connectivity
to Exchange from outside mail clients.

1. Can an Exchange Client (Outlook) be configured to point to the server
from outside our network by using the server's domain name instead of it's
Exchange Server name? For instance if our exchange server's name is JOE,
but the domain name for the same server is BILL.COM, we would normally set
up the exchange client stating the server name as JOE. Can I access the
server remotely, by saying the name is BILL.COM?

2. I can set up access to the exchange server using an IMAP compliant client
such as OL Express within the network without a problem. If I try it from
the internet side, it won't/can't see the server (Connection Failed). I
have a valid exchange mailbox and an NT ID on the server, tied to my
mailbox.

3. The same problem with access to the exchange web interface
"bill.com/exchange". It sees the server (because I get authenticated), but
it won't allow me to log in.

4. I have a New Server Connection set up in Exchange (pull) and it does
have connectivity (it can get my ISP's news server list), but once the
connection is established, the individual NG messages are not retireved from
the ISP and stored on the public folders. What else is needed to done?

In all these cases, I am sitting behind a firewall, but I can access other
mail servers.

These are alot of questions, so I appreciate all of your help.

joe.bill.com, sure of you've properly configured DNS. Or if you're
connecting via RAS or VPN it should't make a difference.

Did you open the ports required for an IMAP client to connect to the
Exchange server through a firewall?

What happens when you try, what levels of authentication are allowed
on that virtual server?

Does your ISP support the newnews command? If not, you need a push
newsfeed.

1. I am attempting to access the server via a static IP address. We are in
the process of waiting on the transfer of our domain name. So, when adding
the MS Exchange service to a profile, I place the IP in the Exchange Server
field. When I "Check Name", I get an error. To test my access, I can
telnet to port 25 and interact with the mail server manually, but I cannot
get to port 143 (IMAP) - it seems to timeout.

4. I will check on the newnews command.

Thanks.

Anything that involves 'check name' is decidedly not IMAP. Check the
FAQ link below for a list of ports required to communicate with an
Exchange server though a firewall, and then implement VPN instead.

NOTE: host and lmhosts files will only work on NT clients that are below
SP4. After SP4 if WINS resolution is enabled then NT will not use hosts or
lmhosts files.

??? Can you provide any reference to that? I haven't heard anything about
HOSTS or LMHOSTS files not being checked if WINS was enabled.

If HOSTS is present it's always used before DNS.
LMHOSTS can also used.

I suspect that "Enable LMHOSTS Lookup" may be what's being referred
to, here. If that's checked the LMHOSTS file is used for host name
lookup in addition to HOSTS and DNS and WINS.
