Newbie Question: How many different API's are there for EWS 2010?

I'm getting a little confused about where to find objects and
references.

I'm wanting to use the Managed API but there seems to be code
referenced in xml /soap so is there another api with a different a
object set that is referred to at the same time?


I'm thinking I'm getting documentation for more than 1 api....so
a lot of it doesn't apply to the managed Api.
