We have a need to potentially put up a 2nd front-end mail server. Currently
we have a single front-end server and a back-end server. Computers in the
office connect directly via Outlook to the back-end server. Remote computers
connect to their mailbox thru the front-end server either via OWA or
RPC-over-HTTP.

We would like to put up a 2nd front-end mail server in an attempt to isolate
the users who connect to which frnt-end server. The current front-end will be
dedicate to our execute team, while the proposed 2nd front-end server will be
for the general employees.

Basically, the two front-end servers would be independent of each other (not
clustered). However, they will connect to the same single back-end server. We
would create a 2nd DNS entry for the new server (i.e. current is
wmail.domain.com and the new would be w2mail.domain.com).

We want to know if this is possible or if we are going about it the wrong way.

Thank you.

That would be fine. In 2007 you would do it with one box and multiple
directories but 2003 is easier with two boxes. Two URLs are fine.
There is no problem with a many:one FE:BE setup.
