I am using IIS 5.0 smtp relay to an Exchange 5.5 server.

Certain valid mail is failing with the Diagnostic-Code:
smtp;554 5.6.1 Body type not supported by the Remote Host.

Is this the Exchange box giving the error or the IIS
server?

It appears to only show up with email that have embedded
html or something similar in them.
Does anyone know a fix for this error?

Thanks!

I have a little insight into the problem. I did a little
research and found that this may be an issue with IIS 5.0
and a mail format issue. Although, IIS 5.0 states that it
supports 8bit mime. Have you taken IIS out of the
equation to see if you still receive the error when
Exchange is just receiving mail?

We have resently changed our internet mail to the same
configuration and noted the same NDR messages on some
mails.

The problem lies in that IIS5.0 SMTP service is accepting
8 bit MIME messages and is relaying those to Exchange. But
Exchange 5.5 does not support 8bit MIME.

To verify this on e-mails with this NDR, open the mail in
a text editor and look for somthing like this:

Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
boundary="next_part_of_message"
