I hope someone may be able to answer what i hope is a simple question.
Our windows server that has Exchange installed has 2 network cards
installed. Both cards have private IP addresses (192.168.1.x), and both of
the private addresses map to public addresses thru our firewall.
My question is: is it possible to force Exchange to use only one of the
Nics for sending email? We are getting mail rejected because the public
address can't be found when you do a reverse DNS lookup.

Thanks

- Is there a specific reason for having 2 NICs on the Exchange server?
- You can bind your SMTP virtual server to a particular IP address, but this
is for inbound/listening only, not for outbound email. Outbound email is
sent using your SMTP virtual server, but the actual network traffic is
routed by the OS using the NIC/IP address that it thinks is "closest" to the
destination host.

Here's a link to Scott Landry's excellent post on the team blog, titled

Address Will Be Used For Outgoing Connections

Is there a special reason for having the second NIC?

I remember that this question came up last year, and someone suggested
manipulating the server's routing tables. I can't remember the exact
command, because it's not something I ever use, but it will begin with
ROUTE ADD . Try just typing 'route' on its own to get the command
help text. The idea is to manipulate the 'cost' of sending packets
via each NIC. Trouble is, I think it will just mean that everything
goes through the other NIC, effectively making the first one
redundant.

Lee.

I removed the gateway from the second card so that all outbound traffic now
goes thru only 1 card and this seems to be working. The second nic is used
primarily for internal access anyway.

Thanks for all your assistance both Lee and Bharat.
