I have just setup my Exchange 2k server. I configured my
SMTP Connector so I can send email out. How do I retrieve
email from the server hosting my domain namespace and
email? I am behind a router using DHCP my ISP does not
offer static IP's.

I would like to simply retrieve all email from a central
email box on a remote server and have my exchange server
download and distribute to the correct mailboxes. Is this
possible? I have looked in 2 different Exchange books and
have not been able to determine what needs to be
configured.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jeff,
Exchange can't do this on its own. At least not that I'm
aware of, since I know for sure older versions could not
do this. It is not designed to. Exchange is designed to
act as an SMTP server to receive mail directly from
another SMTP mail server. What you are asking for is for
Exchange to act as a POP3 client to pull email from your
ISP's SMTP mail server.

There are ways to do this, though I have not done it
myself, and I understand they can be kludgy and prone to
problems. The reason I know this is once tried to do this
when I was first learning Exchange Server.

To find a potential solution, you have two alternatives:
1. get a dedicated (full time) connection to the Internet
with a valid domain name and static IP addresses. Then
you can configure Exchange to be your SMTP mail server by
arranging with your ISP to have your MX records changed to
point to the IP address you assign to the Exchange server
(talk to them about that, they will understand and should
be able to explain that to you). OR 2. (and not something
most people would recommend) search the internet for
exchange connectors that are add-on products that pull
your email from your existing POP3 mail boxes and push
them into your Exchange server. I don't remember any, but
if you hunt around, I'm sure you'll find something. Try
different search phrases with Exchange and POP3 to see
what pops up.

Good Luck,
Ken

Ken - thanks for that it helped me too - I would recommend
Exchange POP3 - do a search on download.com.

There are 3rd Party POP3/SMTP connectors for this purpose
available.

Thanks to all that responded. I found another thread
talking about SBS Small Buisness Server. I loaded that and
it has a Pop3 Connector built in. I have not finished
configuring it yet.

Jeff -

Yes - the SBS Exchange POP Connector is a good one. (It was Acotec's
Mailbridge). Pity that isn't available any more and didn't work on other
Exchange versions.

We use EFS ( www.chimera.nz ) for POP delivery on non-SBS systems. It is
totally simple, not dear and Exchange loves it....!<G>
