Hi all,

I have a problem with the default SMTP virtual server that has been
configured in Exchange 2003. Whenever it is running it seems to
constantly send out data to the Internet. When this SMTP server is
started our Internet connection goes very slow, but when this SMTP
server is stopped everything returns to normal.

I created a new SMTP virtual server for sending email and there
appears to be no problems with this one. It runs fine and delivers
email externally.

When I start the other SMTP virtual server allt he problems start
again.

The only problem I have with the new SMTP server I have created is
that certain users have problems sending to certain distribution
lists. The emails don't get delivered. When I start the problematic
SMTP server the emails sent are then delivered. How can I get all the
new SMTP server used in all circumstances?

I either need the new SMTP virtul server I have created to become the
default and deliver all emails, or the existing one fixed.

Can anyone give me some guideance please?

Thanks,

Gary.

Start with enabling SMTP logging on your original SMTP virtual server;
leave it running for a bit and see if you notice a high volume of
coming from source/destination IP; sender or recipient.

I"m assuming when you created the new SMTP VS you swapped port 25 with
the original?

You also may want to examine your relay list and double check if
you're an open relay on your original SMTP virtual server. The article
below goes over how to check and disable if it is. Disregard the SBS
related stuff.

Maybe you have some very large message in there that's being sent to
another email system and they're sending it right back to you (as a
new message) and there's an auto-forward rule in the mailbox or the
mail to the recipient is forwarded to a contact?

Check the queue directory while the VS is stopped and see if there's
anything obvious in there.

Do you have a SMTP Connector? Did you modify it to use the new SMTP
VS?

Thanks to you both for helping out. It appears that a user sent a
largish email to a large number of users and this was why the Internet
connection got hammered. I deleted all instances of this message,
reverted back to the old SMTP server and everything seems fine. I have
also configured a SMTP connector so that I can have more control over
email going out. Thanks a lot.
