Can anyone provide some quick and dirty solutions to
stopping spam? I know Exchange is a very powerful mail
server, but tapping its capability has proven to be a
daunting task. For instance:

1) Does anyone know a way to configure Exchange 2003 to
perform aggressive sender verification on incoming emails
(perhaps using reverse DNS) and reject emails where the
sender's email address cannot be verified?

2) How about setting Exchange to verify/reject incoming
email domains against known real-time blacklists?

3) How/where to check detailed logs for incoming/outgoing
emails to see the "handshake" process, and trace where an
email orginated, and/or failed?

4) If there are off-the-shelf 3rd-party solutions, or
additional MS add-ins that can be configured/downloaded to
add more
reporting/diagnostics/filtering/capabilities/etc..?

Can anyone help in whole, or in part??

1.If you are using ISA Server 2000 you can configure the SMTP Filter
Use this link:

http://www.tacteam.net/isaserverorg/exchangekit/2003isafilteringsmtprelay/2003isafilteringsmtprelay.htm
2.Actualy the Outlook junk mail feature works good, you can add there entire
domains to block and you can export to a file where other users can import

Try Hexamail Guard for exchange (http://www.hexamail.com),. we use this to
stop SPAM at server level. It has black lists, supports 3rd party DNS black
lists and much more. It also maintains a white list automatically so that
false positives are kept to a minimum. I really reccomend this product, and
their support is very good.

When I browse IIS, the "Default SMTP Virtual Server" is
missing?? I verified that the SMTP Service is installed
through Add or Remove Programs, and that the service is
running. This is preventing me from configuring the ISA
Server firewall as a filtering SMTP relay. Any thoughts??

Paul,

Exchange 2003 allows you to specify RBL server, which can be used to
check against blacklists. Checking against black listed IP address was a
very good technique a few years ago but now spammers have found a way to
bypass that by using someone else's server.

We use Spam Marshall (http://www.spammarshall.com) in our company and it
does a pretty good job in blocking spam. Since you also need
reporting/diagnostics capabilities, Spam Marshall is a good solution. We
really like its reports.

CP
