I have one server. NT 4.0 sp6a PDC, Exchange 5.5 sp4. I have lost the
server. The only backup I have is a full Exchange online backup. The backup
was made using Arcserve 2000, with the Exchange agent.

What I want to do is, restore the Exchange data to another server, and
recover a few mailboxes only.

Is it possible to do this? What are the steps?

Thanks, Chris

yes, there is...the Exchange disaster recovery white paper covers this exact
scenario...

I had a similar problem.
I remember doing the restore and in the restore to
location ( arcserve concole) I mentioned the alternate
server. If you have done a full backup and not a
bricklevel backup then I suppose you can recover all the
mailboxes and then delete the unwanted ones.
If you did a bricklevel backup then you can restore
individual mailboxes (remember to select the alternate
server in the restore to location and then the
corresponding user). If I am not mistaken to restore
individual mailboxes you have to first create the
mailboxes.

The entire note is slightly vague as I remember doing this
nearly two years ago. I restored from a bricklevel backup.

Let me know if you need clarification on anything
particular. I still have the setup in a test lab and can
tinker around

Well, I see the articles. It seems a little vague when it comes to restoring
to a server when you don't have any of the original sid information. I have
no domain controller to attach to. Exchange database only, no brick level.

You should be able to do this on a recovery server with the same server name
and domain, same account, org, and site names (must be exact including
capitalization)

Easy, done this so many times(disaster recovery practice),

1) Install NT 4, sp6a, exchange 5.5, exchange sp4.
2) Make sure the server name is the same and also the Exchagne
configuration of the log path..etc.
3) Install ARCserve 2000 Exchange Agent. (Don't worry about the part
that ask you for the mailbox alias since we are not doing brick level)
4) Stop all exchange service except Exchange System Attendent
5) remove files from \dsadata and \mdbdata
6) Do your restore using ARCserve 2000 thr session or media.
7) Restart the server when done.
8) you may need to manually start DS service after reboot and IS too.

Done.
Bruce
PS: Procedure is ood for moving Exchange server to a different
system:)

I have no problem restoring a full online Exch5.5 backup onto a newly built
PDC. You have another option, check out PowerControl from Ontrack.

The way I read your post, you do not have a BDC and you lost your PDC along
with your Exchange server. If this is correct...... You will not be able
to restart the IS because Exchange cannot authenticate you against the
original SAM.
