Exchange 2010 console not showing anything

Hi,
I am adding a second Exchange 2010 server to migrate across to a new server.
The new server can see both the new and old Exchange instances, however when i open the EMC on the new server it shows in the tree 'Microsoft Exchange' -> ' Microsoft Exchange On-Premises (exchange2.<domain>)' and nothing below this.
Am I missing something simple or is something broken. I expected to see the usual 'organization configuration', 'server configuration' etc.
When I try to connect from this console to the original server, the same thing happens, nothing in the tree?
There is nothing of note in the event logs that I can see.
