exchange 2003 sp2 on windows 2003 server r2
outlook 2003 on xp sp2 workstations

is it possible to set up a group with a mailbox that can be accessed by an
outlook client?

here’s what I know: I can setup an AD group (i.e. reavers) and give it an
email address (i.e. rea...@serenity.net). then all members of that group
receive emails sent to that group’s address. I’ve done that, but that’s not
what I’d like to do here.

I’d like to have a mailbox that a group of users can place in their outlook
client, in addition to their own mailbox. in a way, it’s very similar to
granting a group of users access to another user’s mailbox.

i wonder if I won’t simply have to create a user in AD, give it a group-like
name (i.e. reavers), give it a group-like address (i.e.
rea...@serenity.net), and then grant permissions to that mailbox.

thanks in advance.

That's exactly what you should do.
Every mailbox needs an associated user, so you have to create it even if you
don't need it. Then you can grant right on the mailbox to other users and
have them open it as an added mailbox in Outlook.

You can assign an email address to a group, but that doesn't make it a
mailbox.

In your case, it sounds like you want to create a mailbox....this will
requires an associated user object.

Set up a dummy user, set up the mailbox, grant the users (better still, a AD
security group) Full Mailbox rights (and perhaps also Send As) and have them
open it.

you know, while i'm here ...

i want to grant the AD group i created Full Mailbox rights and Send As, and
I thought i'd done so, but when i attempt to open the mailbox as one of the
users of said group, i get the "can't expand folder" error message.

now i know i could go to the outlook client of the dummy user and grant
permissions that way, but is there a way to do it via exchange system
manager? as alluded to above, i've already gone to Exchange Advanced-Mailbox
Rights in the dummy user, and granted Read, Delete, Change and Full rights.
but it's not working.

again, thanks.

Are your users members of the "Domain Admins" or "Enterprise Admins" groups?
These groups have by default an explicit access denial on all mailboxes
besides their own one.

.... & in addition, is this a mail-enabled security group?

No worries; glad it's all working.

Please, let me add a subquestion.
In my case creating Reavers as AD Grpup is not suit:
I want that all outgoing messages (that I "sent as" Reavers) store in
"Sent Items" automatically of Reavers, not mine.
It like Common mailbox for some users.
You understand me: I wish that all users who have access to Reavers
mailbox can see all other outgoing messages that was sent on behalf of
Reavers in Reavers "Sent Items"?

Thank you!

Hi - in the future, please post new questions as new messages. Very few
people will see this message...."me, too!" posts are frowned upon.

Help us to help you:
http://dts-l.net/goodpost.htm

To address your question, however, nothing native will do this unless you
want to set up Outlook rules for each user (which will be awkward and break
often),. See UniSent from www.ivasoft.biz.

If you have further questions please don't reply in here, but create a new
and updated message.
