Oh, and LMHOSTS is as simple as you described. You don't need 16 spaces.
You only need 1 (most people use TAB though).

If you provide the NetBIOS name *type* in the LMHOSTS file then the
name must be /exactly/ 16 character in length. If you only provide the
NetBIOS name then the entry only needs to be as long as the simple
name.
