how does this database file grow from 9gb to 22gb in two days?

The STM and EDB files constitute two halves of the same database.
The STM file is used to store all native content information. If you have
large numbers of
clients accessing their email exclusively from OWA then the STM file will
remain large(grows faster) as inbound email and native content will remain
in the STM
file. This is done for performance as anything in the STM file we do not
have to convert in and out of MAPI.

Once a user accesses information that is stored in the STM from a MAPI
client (outlook) we will promote the information from the STM file into the
EDB file. So basically you do not really need to worry about the size of
the STM file in relation to the EDB file. Now there maybe additional white
space in the STM file that we should be able to recover using an offline
defrag.

eseutil /d <path to priv1.edb> (this will do the edb and stm)

One way is that you could have a mail loop. Did you enable automatic
forwards or replies to the Internet?

No, i haven't enabled automatic forwards or replies. There are a
large number of usrs using owa. About 110 people total use this
exchange box and approx. 40 use owa. The remaining users just connect
using outlook. with the stm file storing all native content, it just
confuses me that there was such a large jump in size of the file.

Perhaps they got a lot of large messages in a relatively short period of
time, then.
