I have a client with an Exchange server behind a Watchguard Firebox
that is having trouble with Direct Push. The wierd thing is that it
does work for a period of time after a manual sync, but then seems to
time out and not reconnect. We have followed the instructions in KB
905013 to increase the connection time out to 9000 seconds or 15
minutes, but still don't get direct push after a few minutes. We are
also not seeing the 3033 event ID errors mentioned. They are running
Exchange 2003 SP2 and have Windows Mobile 5 on Treo 700W devices from
Verizon with MSFP (some upgraded, some came with it).

What I need is suggestions on how to troubleshoot this. First, how to
monitor. I have found the perfmon options for watching activesync, but
not sure what I should be seeing there. How can I watch to the
specific traffic to and determine if it is being blocked by the
firewall (we are looking at the logs of the firewall, but not seeing
any evidence of this). Also, is it possible to setup a virtual copy of
Windows mobile 5 to try testing connectivity from internally to
eliminate the firewall? Any other thoughts?

You could increase logging for activesync to see if anything stands out.

I am having the same issue with direct push and Watchguard. When I talked
with watchguard they told me that they don't have support for that technology
as of yet. If you have any answers please post them

Model - X700
Firmware - 8.3
Software - Fireware Pro 8.3.1
OS - Server 2003 Enterprise
I am able use OWA and OMA, I have allowed Ping in and out, I have logging
set up on port 443 and there is nothing showing it is being blocked. All of
the settings for direct push are setup.

I have heard that there may be NAT routes set up in the Watchguards that
prevent the ability to use this service. Is there anything I should look for
to make sure this is not happening.
