Dear all,

I have a ntbackup file of my exchange box before it started to go horribly
wrong last night.

Thus I have a new server on the domain and wish to restore the mailbox store
onto this new server rather than restore this to the existing corrupt
server - is this possible?

When I try to do this in NTBackup, the following message appears:

Unable to restore Exchange data to SERVERX\Microsoft Information Store\First
Storage Group,
check the application event log for more information

I then get an event 9635 - failed to find a database to restore to.

Help please....

The new server has to have the same name as the old one.

What exactly did you do? And is it Exchange 2003 with SP2?
Did you install a new server with the same name?
Did you install Exchange with the disasterecovery switch?
Did you try to restore the information store from the backup?
Can you restore the priv1.edb, pub1.edb, pub1.edb and priv1.stm it to
another location?
Did the backup work properly at all?

I know you will be panicked, so i give you more possible solutions.
btw: disasterrecovery was misspelled in my previous reply.

Further:
Are the information store databases still recoverable from the old server's
drives?
If not and your backup is corrupt, there's a tool on the market that's
called ost2pst.
If your users use cached mode then they have ost files and they can be
converted to a pst.

Use this article; you need to verify that serveral paramters are
correct. When the restore.env file gets restored it will reference
these parmaters etc partition patch; db name etc.

Moving an Exchange Mailbox Database to Another Server or Storage Group
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997006(EXCHG.65).aspx

"Restore an Exchange-aware online streaming backup of the database,
redirecting the restore location to a different server For this
method to work, the new server must be configured with a storage group
and logical database whose names are identical to those on the
original server.
For example, you make an online backup of a database with the logical
name "Mailbox Store (Server A)" in storage group "Server-A-SG1" on
Server A. You may then create a storage group called "Server-A-SG1" on
Server B, and then create a database in that storage group called
"Mailbox Store (Server A)."
You restore the online backup, changing the restore location to Server
B, and the backup will be restored to the matching storage group and
logical database names on Server B."
