Hi,

Is it possible to change the name of my exchange server and if so where
can I do it?

Thanks,
Brian

Yes, it is possible, but Exchange services (and probably some others) will
not start.
Read FAQ, App A for some clues

I,m not finding anything in the link...all the article refers to is
moving the server and not renaming which is what I want

You install second server in site, move all data to it, remove first
server from site, shut it down, wait for some time, uninstall Exchange
on it, probably reformat all drives, reinstall NT with needed name,
install Exchange, move all data to it, remove first server from site,
shut it down, wait for some time, uninstall Exchange on it, probably
reformat all drives.

Is this the only way?

_I_ do not know any other.
But let me ask different question
_Why_ would you want to rename your server?

It differs form the naming convention we are using at the moment.....+
my boss asked me to find out about it!

So there is no real need to change it?
Forget about that.

Then I guess you could exmerge all of the data (uglier), better to
flog the person who installed the server and pretend it conforms to
the naming standard.

Might be easier to change the standard and change all the other servers.

Another thing to keep in mind is you will prob. have to vist the
clients and point thier outlook to the "new" server. If you use the
two server method and move the users to the other server and ALL of
them open outlook. Then you won't have to. The same is true when you
move them back.

The papers from Microsoft are very good on this. However, I was
unsuccessful when I tried to change the netbios name without using two
servers.
