The layout:
Exchange 2003 SP2 w/OWA
Outlook 2003 SP2

I can connect to the email server with my Outlook client. I can open all
emails prior to Tuesday and perform all email functions (reply, forward,
etc). Since Tuesday, I cannot open or perform any email functions with any
messages. I see who the message is from, the subject, and date/time stamp.
The message is gray'ed out in the Preview Pane and states "This item cannot
be displayed in the reading pane...". Likewise, when I try to open the
message, it states "Can't open this item". I'm leaning toward a server issue
since I also get the "HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error" when attempting to
open the message in OWA.

If it were just one client, I would think it were a client issue, but since
it's all workstations and OWA, doesn't it have to be the server? No *known*
recent changes have been made to correspond with the issue.

TIA for your help!

Is this only your mailbox? You could have a corrupt message. You might
investigate by using PFDAVADMIN.

Nope...that's what makes this really strange. It has the "look" of a client
issue, but acts like a server issue. It is doing the same thing on all
mailboxes.

Try moving the mailbox to a different store and select to skip
corrupted items and specify a value, I think it can skip up to 100.

Perhaps it's a message that was sent to everyone.

I created a new user (new mailbox) and sent a test message. Still
can't view any email message since Monday. Is it possible to reset
forms from the server side? This problem acts like a forms issue I
once had in Outlook. The weird thing with this problem is that it
happens on all clients and through OWA....so it has to be
server-side...right???

Is there a view configured on the folder?

How can I tell? Which folder are you referring to?

The Inbox. Open the mailbox with Outlook and then select View and see if
there's a special view on the folders, like hide unread or some such.

Ed,

I am having this EXACT same problem at a client of mine....theirs
started Saturday (9/9/06). Their server had done some type of crash
and reboot Friday night - and I thought that corrupted something.

However, I restored from Tape back from Thursday night - and still have
the same problem.

Anything before Friday at 4pm works - anything received after that does
not.

Have you gotten anywhere with this?

Thanks,
Jeff

JC (sorry, I said Ed before),

I have fixed my problem - I am curious if your's is the same, or
related.

I am running Kasperskry Anti-Virus for Exchange - and I noticed it kept
crashing when I would try to open one of the new messages. So, I
uninstalled it (just disabling the service didn't help) - and that
fixed it.

I then reinstalled the app - and I couln't open ANY emails..so for now,
I have it off.

I would check your Anti-virus software on that server, especially if it
has an Exchange piece.

Let me know.

I'll definitely try that next - we're using Symantec.

UPDATE: I have taken a laptop with Outlook loaded on it that was
functioning in another domain (with an identical Exchange environment)
and had the same result. It has to be server side...but my AV client
was also Symantec. I'll try this and see if it works.

Thanks!

That worked! I uninstalled Symantec from the server and it worked!
Thanks to all! Just curious, jborello. What are you using as
Antivirus on your server now?

JC,

We use Kaspersky for Workstations, Server and Exchange. The piece that
was causing our problem, was the part for Exchange. We still have the
server piece on and running.

We have talked to the Kaspersky support folks - and they have not seen
any other problems like this.

The thing that tipped me off - was the fact that the Kaspersky Exchange
piece would crash everytime we opened an Email. Scary thing - even
with the Service Disabled, it would still cause the problem.

Looks like something was wrong that would lock the item and keep it
from being opened.

We are going to do some troubleshooting with them over the next few
weeks.

Good luck!
Jeff
