We are running Windows 2003 sp1 and Exchange 2003 sp2. Can I add a new
address list to the "All Address Lists" in Exchange System Manager with it's
own custom search setting and have them show up in the GAL?

Here's the problem. We are a Univ. and we have two domains, one for
Fac/Staff and one for the students. Students are NOT in the GAL at all, and
they don't have a GAL. However, I have one user on the student side that I
need in the Fac/Staff GAL.

I hought maybe I could add another address list to the "All Address Lists"
and filter it based on "Custom Attribute 10". I would add something to that
attribute and only that user would show up in the new address list. Then I
just need that new address list to show up the the GAL along with the old
address list.

Bottom line is I need Outlook 2003 to be able to resove that user so I can
create a user profile. To run the DST2007 Calendar Uptate Tool I need to be
able to create an Outlook Profile. However, you can't create a profile if
the user doesn't show up in the GAL.

Any thoughts?

I created a new address list under "All Address List" called "My Test
Address List". I added a filter and clicked the "Preview" button and
everything works great! The user that I expected showed up fine. However,
when I select the address list from a new email in Outlook 2003 nothing
shows up.

Are clients using Cached Mode?
Address lists other than the Default GAL are not part of OAB (Offline
Address Book) that's downloaded and used by Outlook 2003/2007 clients in
Cached Mode.

If not using Cached Mode, is the user hidden from Exchange address lists?
(ADUC | User properties | Exchange Advanced tab)?

Hey Bharat,

Thanks for your reply. We are a Univ. and we have two AD and Email domains,
one for Fac/Staff and one for students. We filtered out the student address
so they don't show up in the GAL, but the acct(s) are NOT hidden via ((ADUC
| User properties | Exchange Advanced tab) they are just filtered out.

To run the patch for DST 2007 on an Exchange server you first have to create
an Outlook profile on the server that you want to run the update tool on.
That persents a problem, to create a profile you have to be able to resolve
the name. However, the name won't resolve if it's not in the GAL. I
created an AD user on the student side that I want use but it's not in the
GAL. Some how I need to get it in the GAL so it will resolve.

Maybe I could just move my acct. to that server and run the tool? Anyone
have any feedback on that?

If the user is filtered out of the gal you will not be able to resolve it. When you do a check names you are making a call to the active directory to check for that user in the address list container, so if you want this to work you will need to get them in the gal by either unfiltering them or un-hiding them from the address book if they are hidden

Thanks everyone,

I got my issue resolved.  To run the DST2007 Calendar Uptate Tool the doc(s) states that you must have a box on the server that you want to run the tool against.  ALL of the boxes on that server are hidden from the GAL (filtered by domains).  After giving it a little thought, the doc(s) didn't say that I had to have an acct. in that domain so I just moved my mailbox to that server (my acct. has all the mailbox rights it needs) and it worked!  My address is in the GAL and my box was on the server that I wanted to run the tool against.

Thanks for everyone's help on this.
