Hello everyone,

Is it possible to have Exchange always use an external DNS server to deliver
mail?

What I Am Trying Do:

We use an external web hosting company to host our web site and e-mail.
Unfortunately, we do not have a web mail option. I need to provide our
traveling employees a way to check e-mail while on the road through a web
mail type solution.

The Only Problem:

My Exchange server is working perfectly. I setup the traveling employee's
addresses to send mail to the normal web hosting mailbox and to send a copy
to the exchange server. The only problem that occurs is when they respond to
and e-mail address that exists on the Exchange server. It just gets routed
to that mailbox and not the web hosting mailbox. I assuming this is because
there is no need to send the e-mail out to the internet if the mailbox is
local.

Is there a way to change this?

Thanks everyone,
Frankie

Why not host your own mail? Do you have an dedicated WAN connection? This
would provide a OWA 2000 for web based mail for all your traveling
employees. Unless you are tied up with a long term contract with your web
hosting company, I would suggest hosting your own mail. You have already
purchased the most robust messaging system in the world, why not use all its
features?

Well, we just switched over to the new web hosting company and everyone is
now able to send and receive without problems. We do have a dedicated WAN
connection that can be used, that is what I have the server on now.

I guess the short answer is that I don't want to be the person responsible
for making sure everyone's e-mail is working properly. I already manage
other mission critical servers and don't need the trouble of one more. I
made the decision to use external hosting to eliminate having one more
headache. But anyways, I hope I can figure this out.

Thanks,
Frankie

I agree entirely with John. You will never be able to make your
configuration work reliably and consistently - and it's overly complicated.
Better to host your own mail - there is no downside, and you can have people
using OWA to access far more than just their inboxes.

But you are already responsible for the Exchange server anyway?

I am assuming there is no way to accomplish this then?

Not reliably, not consistently, and it isn't the best way to do things, so
why bother? There's no downside to hosting your own mail, and a *lot* of
advantages....

Yes, that is correct. At this point that is all I need it to do.

There are dozens of cheaper webmaikl packages than Exchange. Install one like
SakeMail http://www.endymion.com/products/sake/mail/index.htm (there are
dozens of others listed at www.hotscripts.com and www.cgi-resources.com) on
your host's web server or on some box in your environment and provide a POP
interface to their existing mailboxes.
