I've recently had incoming mail returned to sender with
the following error message:

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal
errors ----- <email address>
(reason: 552 Requested mail action aborted: exceeded
storage
allocation)

I've checked, and as far as I can tell we have no storage
limits set.

Has anyone ever encountered this before?

Sure, whenever the recipient you are sending to has exceeded the storage
limit on *their* mailbox.

We have no limits set at all--not overall and not for
users mailboxes. All of the limit boxes are unchecked.

Plus, we have lots of other users that have way more in
their mailboxes.

That's what makes it so puzzling.

I think Andy was referring to the other people (outside of your
organisation) that may have limits set.

But having re-read your first post, are you saying that people outside of
your org who send to you are getting the message? Or are your users getting
the message?

People outside the org are getting this message when they
try to send to us.

There are not storage limits set on the information
store. Each user's limits are set at "use information
store default".

This comment may not make sense but would it be possible that *they* (the
senders) have reached *their* mailbox limit, and prohibited to send out
messages?

If Mailbox limit was a problem the message is mailbox limit reached or like
something ...
your message says, "exceeded storage ALLOCATION" .... this reads
as error within processing this message with one of the exchange services
parts ....
IMC, MTA cannot allocate enough space to save the message ...

Do you have checked TEMP directory, IMC working directoy, MTA working
directory space?

What size is your priv.edb file? 16 Gb reached?

regards, uli ;-)
