This is Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003 Advanced with the latest service packs
and updates.

I'm having a difficulty downloading email by POP3 with certain users.

I have no problem with many accounts. However, when I set up Outlook and
test the configuration it will continue to prompt me for the login
information. I might normally suspect I typed the server name, username or
password incorrectly...but I'm sure I got it right. I've tried it in OWA
and can log in just fine. The user has no problems logging into the domain
with his username and password. The only problem I've seen is when trying
to download by POP3.

I telnetted into the exchange server on port 110 and did the user and pass
commands and got the following error:

-ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Again, this works just fine for many users. Deleting the user and
recreating the account will resolve the problem. However, I would like to
find a better solution if there is one.

Is there some way I can troubleshoot this issue? Is the domain account
somehow not tied to the exchange server correctly? I tried using the
Exchange Server Best Practices Analyzer and fixed a few minor things it
suggested. But none of it seemed relevant nor did it work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary

Gary,

What username suffix are you using? The UPN?

domain\username\alias works. I tried before with just domain\username but
that did not work.

Did I do something to cause this? They had an outside server doing email at
AT&T and their internal domain logins were not the same as their usernames
on their email addresses. I suppose we created aliases to match their AT&T
usernames.

Should I change their aliases to match their domain login? Or how would you
suggest I simplify the login?

Thank you very much. At the very least...at least I can configure a POP3
email client now. :)

Gary,

The reason you have to append the Alias is because the username is different
to the alias. When you are recreating (go check the accounts you recreated)
these will now match.

Anyhow Idon't recommend using the domain\username\alias, use the UPN.

...and *I* don't recommend using POP3 to access Exchange. It's a waste!

And Sometimes the UPN doesnt work, so you have to use
domain\username\alias thing.
