I'm having an issue with running a brick level back of the individual backup
on Exchange 2003 using Arcaserve 11.1 with the exchange agent. I get the
following error a few not all mailboxes. E8602 Failed to read from databse.
(DBNAEM=\\X:\Individual Mailboxes\Y\Inbox, EC=X:Backup Agent Error -- (366)
"Failed to open a folder".)

X is the name of our exchange server. Yi sthe name of the mailbox.

I'm wondering if the mailbox might be corrupted since this is the only area
that it fails on.

An item might be but the whole "mailbox" won't be.
Check with CA support for exactly what to do for that error code
though.

Or stop doing brick-level backups :-)

Exchange 2003 provides deleted items retention, deleted mailbox retention,
recovery storage group and Mailbox recovery center. The combination of
these negates any possible benefit of brick level backups.

Hi George,

Thanks for posting here. Thanks all for sharing experience.

I appreciate that you have taken the time to write to us. I truly
understand the inconvenience you may be experiencing. However, since the
issue happens due to third party application Arcaserve 11.1, I'm sorry to
inform you that this issue falls outside the support boundaries for
Microsoft products.

Please understand that Arcaserve is a third-party application produced by
third party manufacturer independent of Microsoft. Arcaserve Utility
provides completely different mechanism from Microsoft NTBackup to backup
Exchange Information Store such as brick level backup (BLB). As you know,
each product has its own knowledge base and support team to provide
service, just as we are here to help customer solve issue related to
Microsoft Exchange Server, we are not professional in Arcaserve and not
authorized to access their internal Knowledge Base, so cannot provide
official suggestion. For this kind of issue, I am afraid that you need to
contact the third party manufacturer for further assistance on this
product. Your understanding on this is appreciated.

As support professional for Exchanger Server, I recommend you using the
NTBACKUP application included in Windows Server to perform the backup of
Exchange Information Store.

NTBACKUP has the feature to back up Exchange server data while Exchange is
running as it can call the Exchange service to get data from that service.
Unlike some third party backup application which can be used to backup
specific mailbox, NTBackup can only be used to have store-level backup.

If you would like to perform backup task while the Exchange service is
running, refer to the following article.

For Exchange 2000/2003: 258243 How to Back Up and Restore an Exchange
Computer by Using the Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=258243

Hope this helps. If there is anything I can do, feel free to let me know.
And if you would like us to work support engineer for third party
manufacturer, feel free to let me know, it is always our pleasure to
provide assistance. Have a nice day!

Lee Li
