Hello,

I have a SBS running Exchange 5.5 sp3. I just started at
this company last week, and I noticed the online defrag
messages are saying that the private information store
only has 30mb free and the public has 49 free. So, I ran
an offline defrag this weekend on both databases.

If the exchange information store can be 16gb, why is the
server telling me it only has 30mb free when the actual
database is no larger 1.5 gb? Will the database just grow
as it needs to?

Thanks in advance for any help you may provide!

When online defrag reports that the 'private information store has 30Mb
free' it means that there is 30Mb of space free **INSIDE** the Information
Store (the files that end in .edb, you can check the size).

When messages are deleted, online defragmentation will mark the space that
was occupied as 'free'. New mail that arrives is stored here first. When
there is no more free space in the database, the database expands.

Hope this helps.
