We are running Win NT 4.0 SP 6a with Exchange 5.5 SP 4
There are currently 115 stuck in the Outbound Queue dating from
current to a day and a half ago. Of the 115, there are 43 different
domains the messages are trying to go to. Highlighting the messages
and trying to force them hasn't helped, neither has toggling the
Internet Mail Service. I even came in late last night and rebooted
the Exchange server and that didn't help either.
I can perform an nslookup to 90% of the domains in the outbound queue
and from obtaining their IP addresses, I can even ping them.
Yet, not all of the messages are getting hung up in the queue, since I
just sent out two e-mails to two different people and they went
through fine, yet if I look at the queue there are 130 messages in it
right now. I just sent the two e-mails at 3:55pm and 4:00pm and the
latest dated message in the queue is today's date with a time stamp
of: 4:02pm
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. How is you IMS configured?
a. Using DNS
2. What is the reason stated in the e-mails that are in the queue?
a. Host unreachable
3. Whose DNS are we using?
a. The University that we are going through. We have contacted
them and they said they haven't changed anything (so they say).
4. Are you doing your nslookup from the Exchange Server console?
a. Yes and also from the web, keeping in mind that this gives us
an IP address and we can then ping it.
5. Does your Exchange Server have a static outside IP address
(conduit)ů?
a. Yes and we have no problem receiving e-mails
Here is some other infoů..
I can send e-mail fine to my personal account @peoplepc.com and I was
also able to send to my wife's work so I know some are getting through
even though we have over 80 still stuck in the queue.
Another thing we noticed is our firewall (Check Point) was dropping
all smtp from our mail server with a rule zero. We fixed this and we
still are no further along.
We turned logging on for message transfer and we can see other e-mails
that are getting out, but quite a few are still stuck until they time
out and new ones are being added.
Thanks,
Rick V.
