What triggers the committing of the log files after a backup? I use
Brightstore and back up the 'First Storage Group' and do a 'brick-level
backup'.... I prefer to only do the brick level backup (is that
recommended?).... Will doing a b-l-bu commit the transaction logs and purge
them?

Many thanks.

Only a Full (Normal) backup will truncate the logs. Brick-level backups are
not a very stable backup method. In fact, it is no different then using
ExMerge.
