My exchange server doesn't seem to receive e-mail for mailboxes using SMTP
connector.
How can I troubleshoot this to find the issue?

Try this and post back what happens.

XFOR: Telnet to Port 25 of IMC to Test IMC Communication

I tried to connect via telenet and got back a different repsonse from what
was expected in the knowledge base article.
Why doesn't port 25 return Internet Mail connector information?????
I got this;

220 remy.wendell.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.2966
ready
at Mon, 4 Jun 2001 16:36:12 -0400

I just tried it with mine and I got a response similar to yours. The
Knowledge Base article appears to have been reviewed October 27th 2000, so I
don't know why it states the response should be different.

No matter; it appears that so far things are working as they should be.

What happens when you follow through steps 2 to 10 in the article ?

IIRC, that is the header presented by the IIS SMTP service. Stop and
disable the IIS SMTP service on your Exchange server and try again....

What are you referring to? IIRC. The prompt didn't return that.
What is the SMPT service for IIS on Win 2000 used for?
How do I set the server to accept e-mail for wendelltextiles.com, when that
is a valid domain on the internet? If I ping that from my exchange server,
it goes to the internet. I'd like it to be my exchange server
(remy.wendell.com), at least on our LAN.

IIRC - "If I remember correctly".

To provide SMTP services.

You can have _any_ SMTP software running on your server. If you want Exchange
to accept mail for yur domain and deliver it to mailboxes you will need
Internet Mail Connector (Service) running and listening on port 25.

The server currently accepting mail for wendelltextiles.com is
enda.pair.com

> set type=MX
> wendelltextiles.com
Server: xxxxx.xxxxx
Address: x.x.x.x

wendelltextiles.com MX preference = 50, mail exchanger = enda.pair.com
wendelltextiles.com nameserver = ns31.pair.com
wendelltextiles.com nameserver = ns0.ns0.com
enda.pair.com internet address = 209.68.1.169
ns31.pair.com internet address = 209.68.1.71
ns0.ns0.com internet address = 209.197.64.1
>

If this isn't the right one, you will have to get your ISP to change your MX
records.

Which version of Exchange are you running? My first reply was based on
the assumption that you were running 5.5, which handles SMTP services on its
own- the Internet Mail Connector. Exchange 2000 relies upon the SMTP
services provided by the IIS server. IIRC means "if I recall correctly",
which is often used on the Internet as a disqualifier when someone isn't
totally sure about what they're saying.
