I have Exchange 2003 SP1. This server has been in production for 2 years.
Yesterday my users just started reporting "outlook is retrieving data"
messages. I could not see any performance anomolies on the Exchange server.
I have read alot of documentation about this error but where do I start
troubleshooting it, Exchange server, GC server, Domain Controllers, or
network traffic? IN the Exchagne Server connection status window - what #'s
would be normal for avg resp? Thanks for any input

I'd start with checking disk io, average read and write latency on your db
and log partitions. If they are consistently over 20ms that may be the
problem. If this checks out start looking at your AD GC environment. How are
the servers performing any CPU bottlenecks?

Enable the logging feature from Outlook 2003, and then check the event log
for any Error\Warning\Info after reproducing the issue. Read in the
description window as what is causing these messages to be generated.

2) Is there any pattern of some specific time when these messages are
generated at client machines. Find out how many users are affected and the
similarities in those users.

This is a really good whitepaper on troubleshooting Exchange
performance. I would set up some counters listed in this article to
determine your bottlenecks. You may want to look into doing some
baselining so in the future, so if you run into perf issues you can
determine whether its due to oversubscription or to some isolated
event. Isolated events could be things like your Blackberries, Desktop
Search Engines, Viruses, etc.

Blackberries wont be isolated events!
