Exchange server is failing every 3 or so days. Corrective action so
far ( my predecessor ) has been to reboot the mail server.

How do I extend the size of the "mailbox store"? How to prevent the
store from continuing to grow?

searching on this error, people are asked if they are standard or
enterprise edition. I am not sure. In "exchange system manager" I dont
see a 'server' tab.

I am windows server 2003. In exchange system manager, help, about
exchange system .. version 6.5.7638.1.

Hi there,

With Exchange 2003 SP2 you can increase the logical size supported for
Exchange Standard. You already have SP2 installed by the way as the default
limit is set at 18GB (an SP2 feature) rather than 16GB.

Follow: http://www.petri.co.il/change_store_size_limits_ex2003_sp2.htm

Hope this helps,

Oliver

reading the article, exchange checks the database size limit at 5am
every day. If the size limit is exceeded, a warning event is logged.
The next 5am size check then brings down the server if the limit is
still exceeded. When we reboot the mail server, we are just resetting
the size check clock, giving us another 48 hours of operation. Is
that correct?

Am I able to get an email on the first database storage limit exceeded
warning?

How do I reduce the space used so the 18GB is not exceeded? Many of
the email accounts on the server are for long ago departed employees.

thanks for the help,

-Steve

Hi Steve,

Continue on down reading the article. It states with SP2 how to up the limit
to 75GB...

right, it says to change some registry settings ... I am fearless
and will backup before making the changes. Interested to know what
the problem is all about.

In exchange system manager, mailbox store, mailboxes I see the storage
used by each user. Is this the majority of the storage being consumed
in the 18GB database?

If I delete individual mailboxes, that will free up space in the 18GB
database?

I see the option for moving the mailbox, but dont follow what all of
that entails.

thanks for the help. It helps me a lot.

-Steve

Hi there,

If you delete the mailbox, once it is purged it will count towards free
space in the database with SP2 yes.

18GB is small limit. I would up it anyway. You don't have to go all the way
to 75GB - so if you ever hit it again, you have allowed yourself some
breathing room.
