The ExchangeTeam have been commissioned to perform some research on PST
problems suffered by organizations running Exchange and identify partners
for a beta program for PST management software.

The questions that we would like the answers to are

Do you know how many PST files are currently active in your network?

Are you hitting the 2 gig limit on many of these files?

Are you looking at migrating data out of these PST files to other storage?

Do you consider the information in PST files to be important enough to
consider content managing this information?

What is the biggest single headache that PST files give you?

What would you like to see done to help improve PST management?

I would like to here any comments you have on this. Either email me direct,
post a reply to this posting or filling the form at
http://www.exchangeteam.com/pst_survey.asp

Thanks

Simple answer: no PSTs. Ever.

lanwench, honey, as kickin' as you are, some of us are stuck with PSTs no
matter what. My company limits my mailbox size to 95 MB, and I HATE
deleting email I might need later (maybe I'm a little bit retentive, but
hey..). So I use a PST to keep things that I think I'll need later but that
aren't "active". I'm usually pretty good about backing my PST up to other
media on a regular basis, but lost about a month's worth of (archived, not
active) data last year, due to a hard drive problem.

My answers:

1. Nope; it's not my network, though.
2. I've seen this more times than I'd care to admit.
3. Not really.
4. Yes; not always, but sometimes.
5. They are easily corrupted.
6. Egad. Too many things to list.

Yeah, I admit I'm a bit fascistic. My mailbox is kept no bigger than 50MB at
any given moment - that's personal and business mail combined - I am a
ruthless housekeeper, use PFs for things that I think I may need to hang on
to for a while, and save attachments out to disk. That's just me...I know
some people need bigger mailboxes than that. Archiving isn't a bad idea, but
I'm not thrilled with the built-in auto archive stuff in outlook, because if
you've ever had to support it, you'll know that stuff just mysteriously gets
lost - or the file grows to monumental size and gets corrupted. If it's your
own PST and you know how to maintain it, it's one thing - it's another when
you have a gazillion users with archive.pst files all over the place, and
they can't get their stuff back.
I'll stop ranting now so we can return to our regularly scheduled program...
:-)

I absolutely agree that archiving blows chunks.

And you're a wild woman.

Heck, I'm relatively tame these days. Home lobotomy kit works wonders. <g>

You should go work for EDS UK, we get mailbox limits of 25MB, or up to
50MB if you're a top manager.
We get charged oodles of dollars for taking up file space, so storing
backups of PSTs are out, so it's PST's on the laptops and open house
on the CD Writers. I have never seen so many CDs being used as
frisbees, coasters and god knows what else.
