Have bunch of users who recently departed from the company. Boss wants us to
auto replay to all of the incoming messages to those mailboxes with separate
(user specific) messages. Also, he would like us to bounce the messages too.
Any ideas on how to do this on Exchange 2003 Enterprise SP2 and Office XP,
Office 2003? So far I have set up out of office for each user but will send
the bounce message only once and will still receive the mail. Please help.

Ah - you mean auto-reply.

I don't think you can accomplish both. If you want to bounce all mail, then
Exchange isn't going to autoreply with a user-specific message. Currently,
NDR's cannot be customized, though that functionality will exist in Exchange
2007.

Decide which is more important (NDR all mail, or autoreply with
user-specific message) and let us know so the appropriate answer can be
provided.

Well, boss wants the autoreply with customized message. I have out of office
a the moment. If we can do it some other more inteligent way that will be
great ( on the server level)

Ok - if you want autoreply, but can live with no bounces, then what you
would need to do is go into the global settings in ESM and allow Automatic
replies to the Internet (Global Settings, Internet Message Format, Default
Properties, Advanced tab). Now, be aware that enabling automatic replies
can leave you vulnerable to a mail loop, which can literally cripple a
server. If you still want to do an automatic reply, then you can set up a
rule in Outlook to reply to each message. You should be able to set up said
rule to be a Server-side rule, so Outlook wouldn't need to remain open, but
unfortunately there isn't anything at the server level that can do this.

I got the autoreplay set in ESM. Now, what else I need to do? I think I lost
you...

Use the Outlook Rules wizard to create a rule that replies to every incoming
message. It will be a server-side rule unless a warning pops up at the end
of the rule creation telling you that the rule is a client-side rule that
requires Outlook to remain open.

Just please, please be aware of the warning about mail loops. You won't be
happy if one happes, your boss won't be happy, and your users won't be happy
either.
