Exchange Admins:

I just took on a new client with SBS2000. They are running a smallish exchange server that historically has crashed about every 3-4 months. I see that they need to run some regular maintenace on their exchange server. Since this is my first go around managing an exchange server I could use your help to properly maintain this technology.

I want to know what utilities to run on the exchange server to ensure best health.
There's eseutil and isenteg...what exactly do they do and why/when should they be run?
What about their switches?
Any other utilities to run?
And finally, what about the order of running these utilities?

thank you so much in advance

it is not recommended to run eseutil or isinteg unless you have a specific issue to resolve...eseutil /d will defragment the database and reclaim diskspace if that is necessary.  isinteg will fix other problems, but you should read both of these before performing either, and ensure that you have a good backup first,  too...

When I worked for MONSTER I remember that the exchange administrators would run maintenance utilities every month or so on the mail servers. I don't know exactly what they did, but I always assumed it was eseutil and isenteg. Could they have been doing something else then?

I don't know...to perform these every month on databases that are working fine is not a recommended procedure...

I totally understand...exchange does it's thing on its own. the only time i need to run eseutil or isenteg is when exchange goes bad
