Has anyone ever had this problem?

Unable to deliver the message due to a communications failure
MSEXCH:IMS:SERVER:SERVER:SERVER_EXCHANGE 3501 (000B0981) 501
syntactically invalid HELO argument(s)

Internet email works properly except when delivering to one particular
domain. Could the problem be due to the fact that I have an underscore in
my server name?

If I have to rename the Exchange server, what is the most painless way to
do it?

Domain names are not supposed to contain underscores, if I remember
correctly.

The only way to change the server name is to reinstall Exchange.

The underscore has not been a legitimate character in an name for
several years.

Display the Site Addressing object's property page, click on the "Site
Addressing" tab and change the SMTP address. There's no need to change
anything else.

Oooops. The IMS "Routing" tab's listbox may need adjustment, too!
Sorry for omitting that.

unfortunately this is not that simple. All of the stated stuff was changed
years ago on our server. It still insists on using the machine name. I
still think changing the name is the only way to go!

Have you tried to simply change the computer's hostname? The NetBIOS
machine name needn't change, just the data in the DNS tab of the
TCP/IP protocol's properties.
