Yesterday all of a sudden some of my users got this strange error when
sending mail out. Some of the people outside also tried to send us mails but
it bounce with the following message : Could not be delivered because of
550 rule imposed mailbox access for us...@domain.co.za refused.Mail relay
denied
As far as i know we SMTP through our ISP because their servers are listed
under Default SMTP server > Properties > Access > Relay > Only the list
below is ticked off and their 2 servers IP's is in the list. Does this
configuration mean we SMTP through them?
So can i blame them for our users getting the errors?
The ONLY thing i did 2 days ago on the exchange is to install MS Antigen for
Exchange - assume this wont cause issues.
Thanks for the help
The same NDR was received by your users trying to send mail *out* as well as
by senders trying to send mail *in* ? That doesn't sound like an Exchange
message to me, but what version & SP level of everything?

Hmmm...that's a verb now?

No - it would mean they could relay through *you*. I'd remove those, pronto.
If you were using your ISP as a smarthost you'd have an SMTP connector with
their server listed.

Unlikely, no.

Never assume. :-)

Can these settings do any harm at all if i take there servers away?

OK, there servers are listed on the General tab of my internet connector
under "Forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts"
these would mean that i use their servers as SMTP servers hey?

Well, if i go look in the Tracking Centre it shows that the message (all
outgoing mails ) is being routed to the SMTP server of the ISP. Where do the
NDR then all of a sudden came from?
The NDR llok like this when someone try to send out: (We'll as far as i know
it hasn't happened today after i logged the call with my ISP...so i assume
they sorted it out - there i'm assuming again :)

There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.

That's an issue on the recipient's server, not yours or the ISP/SMTP relay
host.
