The Exchange 2007 server suddenly stopped deleting log files after
successful backups.
I tried backing storage groups using ntbackup to a local hard drive on the
active CCR node, and backup completes successfully (Event ID 213), but event
ID 916 from ESE BACKUP is not logged, and logs are not deleted. I cannot find
any backup related warnings or errors.
I have used get-storagegroupcopystatus and test-replicationhealth cmdlets,
and all the storage groups are in a healthy status, and all replication
health tests passed.
I would also like to mention that I had an SCR target for all the storage
groups on this Exchange server. This standard Exchange SCR target eas
uninstalled, and Get-StorageGroupCopyStatus –StandByMachine is returning a
reply that copy status is not configured to this target.
Thanks,

Hopefully someone out there can help. My server now has 24,683 log
files for a total of 30.3GB of logs!
I'm almost out of space!

That's the problem: I was using the backup type "copy" instead of
"normal". Once I ran a "normal" backup, it deleted all but my most
recent (uncommitted?) log files.
To Guy Melamed:
Check your command line that you use to do the backup. Look for a
switch that says "/m copy" and change it to "/m normal". Once I did
this, I got an additional event in the Application event log entry:
-----
Event Type: Information
Event Source: ESE
Event Category: Logging/Recovery
Event ID: 224
Date: 1/15/2008
Time: 7:43:42 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SKEXCHANGE
Description:
MSExchangeIS (1600) First Storage Group: Deleting log files D:\Program
Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group
\E0000000001.log to D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox
\First Storage Group\E0000006062.log.
-----
So, this is the list of Application event log entries that I get with
a successful backup of the "First Storage Group" that also results in
deletion of unnecessary log files:
ntbackup 8018
ntbackup 8000
ESE 210
ESE 220
ESE BACKUP 907
ESE 221
ESE 223
ntbackup 8001
* ESE 224
ESE 213
ntbackup 8019
Hope it helps.
I am using a normal backup.

Anyway, I found the problem.
After I installed a second SCR server target server and enabled storage
group copy to the new target, I could see that the old scr was configured as
an SCR target.
Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Configure an SCR target.
2. Uninstall the SCR target server without disabling strogare group copy.
When you test the storage group copy status for the uninstalled server, you
will get a ststus of "not configured", but log files will not be deleted.
To resolve:
1. Configure a seconf SCR target server.
2. Check replication status for the removed SCR target and get a status of
configured.
3. Disable storage group copy to the old SCR target.
