Exchange server 5.5 SP4 on W2KAS SP2. Suddenly deleting or moving sever
items from Outlook become impossible - Outlook displays "Deleting" message
and stops responding. At the same time, deleting the same messages one by
one is OK.

Then comes more serious trouble: users complain, that their counterparts
does not receive their Emails. Inspecting Internet Mail Service queue (using
Exchange administrator) shows, that most of the Emails stay in queue for
several hours with error "Host unreachable". When testing the problematic
hosts from Exhange computer - everythig seems OK, host is resolved and it is
possible to transfer message to it using telnet. Then, after some hours, new
Emails to the same addresses are transferring OK, but the old mails still
stay in the queue.

What is the possible reason, Where to find additional diagnostic info, how
to force delivering problematic Emails?

These are two completely different problems.

For the first one.... Did you run the Exchange Optimizer after appying your
Exchange Service Packs?

For the second one.......

Take a look at your DNS. Host unreachable usually means host unresolvable
by DNS.

1. No, we have not. But the SP was applied several month ago. Shoiuld I
start Optimizer now?

2. DNS is quite OK, more of that, new Emails to the previously problematic
addresses now are going OK, but old messagest were standing in a queue with
the same "Host unreachable" error. Now I have deleted them, but what to do
if the situation repeates?

How is your IMC configured to send - resolving via DNS, or sending to your
ISP's SMTP server?

If you haven't yet, than definitely yes. Just backtrack this newsgroup and
see all the grief that has been caused by not running it after applying
service packs.

Have you tested the DNS by running query's against it for the mx records,
and associated A records for domains that are giving you this problem?

I suddenly see "499 Host unreachable" after a series of succesfull commands
exchange. Is it the reason?

That server (The one you are connecting to) does not understand ESMTP.
Standard SMTP should work, and your indicates that it does. It looks more
like a problem at the other end. See my telnet results below. ehlo, with
an argument was not recognized either. Helo worked without an agrument.
