Hi,

I have an exchange 2003 server deployed using the NAS option. The exchange
server is a windows 2003 standard. The NAS box is a windows 2003 storage
server.

It has been operating for some time now without incident. However, recently
the following occiured:

-The Mailbox store and the Public folder store both dismounted unexpectedly.
In reviewing the event logs, I found the following event:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store
Event Category: General
Event ID: 1221
Date: 9/28/2005
Time: 8:12:02 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MINTAKA
Description:
The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (MINTAKA)" has 4 megabytes
of free space after online defragmentation has terminated.

For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

After this event, the next event in the Applicaiton log is:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: ESE
Event Category: General
Event ID: 481
Date: 9/28/2005
Time: 8:32:24 PM
User: N/A
Computer: MINTAKA
Description:
Information Store (3864) First Storage Group: An attempt to read from the
file "S:\{storage.0}\priv1.edb" at offset 193794048 (0x000000000b8d1000) for
4096 (0x00001000) bytes failed after 0 seconds with system error 64
(0x00000040): "The specified network name is no longer available. ". The
read operation will fail with error -1022 (0xfffffc02). If this error
persists then the file may be damaged and may need to be restored from a
previous backup.

For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

There is no corresponding event in any other event log on any of the servers
that could have caused the servers to have been unable to see one another.

The stores both re-mounted without a problem.

I cannot be sure that a physical connection between the servers was not
tampered with during this time.

Any ideas?

TIA

1221s are fyi only that state free space in store, can be safely ignored.
the 481 appears to be a temporary disruption in the network connection
between your Exchange Server and the NAS. Best to have these multihomed/use
NIC-teaming on both ends (Exchange and NAS), with each NIC going to a
different switch. (Refer to your NAS documentation/vendor for best
practices.)
