are the pitfalls to avoid.

Yes, you can.

How about describing your problem, that forces you to reinstall?

My exchange server crashed and after bringing it back up using the
repair disk users can not open their e-mails. They can only see it but
when they try to open any of the mails it just stays their without
opening. Also from OWA they can see the e-mail but the mails won't
open. I also can not use the exchange administrator no more I keep
getting an error message that say "the file mmiext.dll is not a valid
win32 application". Some of my users also get error messages that says,
"Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The exchange server
computer is not available. Either there are network problems or the
Microsoft exchange server computer is down for maintenance.

mmiext.dll is not a valid Windows NT image. Please check this against
your installation diskette.". Some of my users also get error messages

From the event viewer I could see that smtp mails where being recieved
by the IMC but these are not showing up or being distributed to the
users inbox. I can only apply service pack 3 after turning the startup
option to manual and restarting the server. But if the exchange
services are set to automatic it will not let me apply the service pack.
It will give an error message that the service can not be controlled at
it's present state.
