We used NTbackup with exchange support to backup the mail storage. How to

Depends what state the box is in.
Has it been rebuilt from scratch? If so follow the E2K
Disaster recovery guide to recover.
Are you just after recovering a single mailbox or
message? Have you already got a Recovery Storage Group?
That will have a bearing when you actually do the restore.
