MS Exchange 5.5 SP3 / NT 4.0 SP5
Exchange is local POP3/SMTP server, and connects to ISP via
dial-up/ETRN.
Problem: when I renamed one user (from useraa to userbb), make all
modifications in local POP3 client on users machine (pop3 user name and
password etc.) and tried to download e-mail from Exchange server, I got
following message:
Event ID: 13005
Logon attempt by DOMAIN\userbb from 192.168.1.254 to userbb has failed:
EcGetMailboxDN() call failed with error There is no such mailbox on this
server.
(192.168.1.254 is IP address of Exchange server)
I waited for 2 hours - but, still same error message.
Then I made that REGISTRY modification (set update every 2 minutes),
rebooted (just in case) - but still the same. :(
Next, I can't create new mailbox and assign it to some old (already
created) domain user - because it simply wouldn't work :( Same error
message.
But, if I crete new domain user, and afterwards create Exchange
mailbox - everything is ok.
Anybody has some idea what might be wrong?

How you've set up the IMS is inconsequential. It's POP3 that's the
problem.

By changing "user" do you mean that you renamed the NT User Account?
If so, that didn't require any changes to the Exchange mailbox.
Did you also change the alias on the mailbox? To what? What does the
client use for the "account" associated to the mailbox? Have you tried
using this form?
<NTDomain>\<NTUserAccount>\<ExchangeAlias>

If you used only DOMAIN\userbb but didn't change the alias on the
mailbox to "userbb" after renaming the NT User Account, then you'll
have a problem.

Refreshing the directory cache won't help if it's the mailbox that
can't be found. The error doesn't say that the password filed, it says
that the mailbox can't be found.

What (or which) "old name"? Userbb? Remember, the mailbox is still
there. All that the error is saying is that it couldn't find the
mailbox named "UserBB". If the mailbox was named "useraa" and you
didn't change the alias then there's no hope you'll ever succeed in
finding it using "userbb".

MS Exchange FAQ at http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm
We have e-mail address SA...@domain.com and the owner of the mailbox was JOHN
(DOMAIN\john). John left company. Lisa joined our company to take John's
place. I just wanted to rename John's account into Lisa (JOHN ->rename-> LISA)
in order to keep same SID for many reasons (file server permissions etc.).
Ok, I renamed JOHN to LISA, and on Lisa's computer set
username: lisa (instead of john)
pasword: 1234
in Eudora e-mail client (POP3 client for our Exchange Server). After I renamed
(trough User Manager for Domains) account John to Lisa I've checked in MS
Exchange Administrator/Mailbox Properties for mailbox SALES - and it was set
to the Lisa account as it should be. So, Exchange Server was "aware" that
account was renamed.
But, when I tried to access SALES mailbox trough our local network from Eudora
POP3 client with "lisa" as username, and "1234" as password - I got message
(from Eudora) that "mailbox does not exist" (or something like that).
Then I made that Exchange Server registry modification, and rebooted, tried
accessing the mailbox again, but, there were no change.
>By changing "user" do you mean that you renamed the NT User Account?
>If so, that didn't require any changes to the Exchange mailbox.
Yes, I renamed that NT User account, as explained above.
>Did you also change the alias on the mailbox? To what? What does the

No, I haven't made any modification to the mailbox itself.
All we need is to associate SA...@domain.com to Lisa, and that SMTP address is
already set in SALES mailbox properties. It worked fine with John, but after I
renamed John to Lisa - it doesn't work :(
>If you used only DOMAIN\userbb but didn't change the alias on the

Please could you be a bit more specific. What alias on the mailbox are you
reffering to?

>What (or which) "old name"? Userbb? Remember, the mailbox is still
I meant this: if I want to create a new Exchange Server mailbox (let say
SUPPORT) I first must make "fresh" NT Domain account (lets say JOE) and then
created that new mailbox when prompted (when dialog for opening of mailbox
automatically apears after NT Domain user creation). In that case everything
is working fine.
But, if I want to create mailbox SUPPORT trough MS Exchange server
Administrator and pick one "existing" NT Domain user account (for example
JILL, created 3 weeks ago) - I still have very same MS Exchange server mailbox
access problems with POP3 clients in our LAN (Eudora, Calypso, Outlook
Express, Forte Agent etc.).
I hope I've explained my problem more clearly this time.
1. Check the client configuration, please note that the steps for checking
the
configuration will vary depending on the type of client being used.
2. Change the account name to the format of
<NT_domain>\<NT_account>\<Exchange_alias>.
3. Set the password to match the Windows NT password.
4. Save the changes, exit the client, and restart the client.
5. Connect to the Exchange Server POP3 service.
If the connection still fails, follow the troubleshooting steps in the
following
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q161118 XCLN: Troubleshooting POP3 Connections to Exchange Server
NOTE: The format of <NT_domain>\<NT_account>\<Exchange_alias>
should work when using Outlook 98 or Outlook Express clients. Results may

We are using Eudora (90%) and some other POP3 clients, but none of the users
is using OE :(
Unfortuanately, none of our POP3 clients doesn't support that format of
username. :(

Try "DOMAIN\lisa\<ExchangeMailboxName>" for the user account in the
POP3 client.

Yes, it should, but consider that you didn't change the "Alias" on the
mailbox from "John" to "Lisa". And you didn't tell Exchange that you
wanted to use the mailbox with the name "John". You're trying to
locate tha mailbox named "Lisa".

Then do so. Your problem will disappear. Or use the aforementioned
user name to access the proper mailbox.

There's only one. It's on the "General" tab of the mailbox's property
page.
Eudora does.
Just remember to use a "Reply-to:" address so other SMTP mailers
aren't confised when they try to put
<NT_domain>\<NT_account>\<Exchange_alias> in the "To:" header. :)
Thats it!
Thank you!
It was so obvious, but... I guess I was somehow "blind"... :(
Thank you all, once more.
