Usually when linking to another workbook, you start typing the
formula, click in the other workbook, and it adds the file name & cell
reference into the formula.

However, I have a PC at work which has started to behave differently.
When you start to type a formula, and then click into another
workbook, the editing disappears as if you had simply switched to a
different workbook. When you go back to the original workbook, the
cursor is still in the formula bar, but no reference to the other
workbook.

Does anyone have a clue what is going on, and how to cure it?

Thanks!

Just a guess...

If you have the two workbooks open in different instances of excel, you'll see
the problem.

If you have both workbooks open in the same instance, it should work ok.

Thanks Dave - that was indeed the problem! I had even asked the user
to check that, and was assured that it was the same instance of
Excel! Users..... *rolls eyes*

Sometime it will happen like this. To get rid of this issue close
both the excel files and open the files one after another and try.
Now it will work fine.

Thanks Dave. I feel stupid for missing that but it was indeed the problem

Just closing and opening the files as you suggested worked for me; many thanks!
