recalculating excel paste value

hi everybody - does anyone know whether the paste value command causes
the formulas in the cells to recalculate (immediately before the
paste)? I'm having trouble calculating a huge set of formulas. When
I try to calculate them all at once, excel crashes; so I do the
calculations one column at a time. At the end, I got to copy and
paste value the whole range, and excel crashes again. Is that because
of a recalculation? Any hints besides copying and paste value-ing
each column individually?
