Just a comment: This formula is documented in Help. If you search for Help on
"advanced filter", one of the topics is "types of comparison criteria". This
one is included. Maybe there are some others there that will save you time in
the future...

Myrna, you are correct in that the solution does actually exist in the HELP
file. The time I wasted was often in the HELP file. However it isn't in the
place you mentioned (which would be logical), but you have to look under
"Criteria", and then select the option button "Types of comparison criteria".
And you have to know this, because there are a great deal of paths that do not
land up at this point. It was a vague memory frm last year that took me within a
character of teh solution, but it took Bill Manville to tweek it correct.
Personally I find (generally) that the Help file is better than a textbook, but
things are not always stored in a logical order, nor are there always links which
are clear. Perhaps if MicroSoft were to get a syntactical expert to work the
system over so that people could find things over several logical paths ....

It is in that place in XL2000. If you are using an earlier version, you may
not find it there.
