Why is the "Sort" function grayed out?

I am unable to sort a spreadsheet I created by importing from a text
file of e-mail addresses. The first column is the full e-mail address
as imported (e.g. some...@msn.com), the next column is the position
of the "@" character, the third column is a formula to extract the
domain, e.g. msn.com

=MID(A1,B1+1,99)

I want to sort on the domain, but the A-Z icons on the toolbar are
grayed out.

I copied the third column and pasted it into a fourth column as
Values, thinking maybe Sort couldn't work on a column with string
formulas, but that didn't work. The Sort option under Data in the menu
bar is also grayed out.

What can cause the Sort function to be non-operational?

Is the worksheet protected?

Do you have sheets grouped together? (Look in the title bar for [Group]?

If yes, right click on one of the worksheets and choose Ungroup Sheets.

Yes, that was it, although now I have no idea how the sheets became
grouped. It wasn't anything I did deliberately. All my work was done
on the default Sheet1. It must have been something my mouse did when I
wasn't watching :)

Thanks, I'm in business now.

If you click on one worksheet tab and control-click on another (or even
shift-click on another), you'll have grouped the worksheets.

Now anything you do to one of that group, you do to all. (change A1 in one,
change A1 in all. Delete rows 1-17 in one, you've deleted 1-17 in all grouped
worksheets.)

I think you might want to go back and verify that you didn't do any
unintentional damage to your workbook (I guess intentional damage would be ok
<bg>.)
