Sorting Loses Formats

I format individual cells and rows. However, after I do a sort, the formatting ends up in the wrong cells. This happens even when I do a sort from the menu instead of using VBA.
I must admit that I've tried this only in Excel 2003. Has this formatting behavior been remedied in later versions?
