I have a procedure in which I display the progress in the status bar
using......

application.statusbar= "my message here"

I can blank this out at the end of the macro using.....

application.statusbar= ""

but now the status bar no longer shows the normal stuff like calculation,
saving until you restart excel. Any ideas how to reset the status bar to
its original status?

From Excel VBA help on the StatusBar property

This property returns False if Microsoft Excel has control of the status
bar. To restore the default status bar text, set the property to False; this
works even if the status bar is hidden.

So just set it to false.
