Hallo,

I'm having to deal with an increasing number of Client
files, where the w'book consists (essentially) of one data
file, (ie several sheets, but one main datasheet).

I need to split this monster, back into its' constituent
parts. These I'm reasonably happy to define as ranges and
then to create separate w'sheets.

However, on occasion, in one of the ranges, I will find
that:
one or more cells will contain more than 256 characters
....hence an Error/Help message
(which I still don't understand).

Is there any way to cater for this programmatically, so
that a "catch_all" sub could deal with that instance, when
found?

Any help/pointers would be much appreciated.

Regards.

Hi Sturat,

The character limit for a cell is 32,767, of which only 1024 will
display in the cell and all 32,767 will display in the formula
bar.

Perhaps you are dealing with the Column Width, which has a limit
of 255 characters?

Howard

It might be this error:

"The sheet you are copying has cells that contain more that 255 characters.
When you copy the entire sheet, only the first 255 characters in each cell are
copied.

To copy all the characters, copy the cells to a new sheet instead of copying
the entire sheet."

This is the error that you get when you copy sheets (not cells).

One way around it is to copy the sheet, take note of the error. Then go back to
the original sheet and do a Ctrl-A (to select all the cells). Copy and paste
the cells into the newly copied worksheet.

This way you get the format (from the sheet copy) and the extra long cell
values.

(Take care to unhide any rows/columns when you do the copying of the cells.)

Dave & Howard,

Many thanks for the help. It was the 'cell contains more
than 255 characters' problem.

Thanks for a solution.

Regards.
