I'm not sure if this is a Windows or an Excel problem, but in order to
open an Excel (.xls) file I have to first open Excel and then use
File/Open to find and open the file. If I try to open the file by
clicking on it in Explorer, Excel opens with no file displayed, not
even the default blank one.
Obviously, Excel is the application associated with .xls files, but
there's something preventing it from opening them.
Any ideas?

Look in Tools=>Options=>General Tab and make sure ignore other applications
is not checked.

If it isn't you need to go to the Start Menu, select run and do

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe /regserver

This will refresh Excels registration entries.

Change the path to match your installation.

Hi,

Launch your Excel.exe with /regserver command line:

Go Start Menu, Execute command and execute something like:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE" /Regserver

Thanks for your help. I don't know where to enter the command you
suggest - do you mean in "Run" in the Start menu? I tried entering the
regserver command there and got a "Cannot find file..." error message.

Hi Tom

Thanks for your help.I did as you suggested. "Ignore other
applications" was checked. I unchecked it. Didn't work.
I went to Start/Run and typed C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Excel.exe /regserver (this is the correct path to my
Excel). Hit Ok and got a "Cannot find file 'C:\Program' or one of its
components" error message.

????

Rumrill,

You need to surround the file name (but not the /regserver switch) in
quotes. In the Windows Run dialog, enter the following as shown.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver

Chips approach worked for me - sorry for the omission.

An easier way is to use the browse button (in the run dialog) to find the
Excel.Exe file,
Click open,
Then add /regserver after the last double quote.

Got it - I added the quotes and it worked. Thanks Tom!
