Hi All,

I'm working in a file that someone else created. I've
noticed that the cells are all formatted as text even on a
new sheet. Would someone tell me what causes this? I'd
like to find the setting and get rid of it. Thanks.

Hi Erin,
If you are creating the new sheets with a macro then look
in the macro.

If you are creating the new sheets with File, New, Worksheet
then look for sheet.xlt on your system. Templates are
normally placed for default use in your XLSTART directory.
Also check your Tools, options, General, alternate startup
which should be blank for most users. book.xlt applies
to new workbooks and their initial worksheets.=

I suspect that they've accidentally formatted the "Normal" style as
Text in that workbook. To fix it, go to the Format menu, Style...
option. Select the Normal style from the drop-down. Chances are that
"Number" format will be shown as "@" instead of General. Click on the
[Modify...] button, and the normal Cell Format dialog will appear.
Select General from the Number tab, and you should be fine.

Hank,

Precisely my problem! I rarely use Styles so it didn't
even occur to me. The people who set up this file are
obviously not accountants. Thanks for your help.
