I want to lock up the values of linked cells in an Excel
worksheet so that they don't update any more. "HELP"
tells me to just select 'manual' rather than 'automatic'
under Edit-Links. Problem is that the 'manual' option is
greyed out and can't be selected. I'm running Excel 97 on
Windows XP-home, both as received from Gateway recently.
Thanks much for any help!

Excel formula links are always automatic.
If you don't mind losing the formulas, Edit / Copy; Edit / Paste
Special / Values.

>John....you don't have to change all your formulas to
values, go to Tools, Options, select the Calculation tab,
at the bottom for "Workbook Options" uncheck "Update
Remote References". This will effect the automatic
updating of "ALL" workbooks with links. You can then
update them manually by going to the Edit, Links, Update
Now. Hope this helps.

Would you like to put money on that?

I believe that inter-workbook links are not "remote references" but
"external references". "Remote references" are, I believe, links to
data provided by other programs. It is a per-workbook option.

Tools / Options / Edit / Ask to Update Automatic Links, on the other
hand, is an application-level option and applies to all workbooks with
links. HOwever, it results in links always being updated when you open
workbooks instead of giving you the dialog asking whether you want to
do this - so is the opposite of what is required here.

Hey Bill, I come from the future (2017), I just want to let you know that even today I struggle with the same problem you had in 2003. Were you able to find a solution?

From four more years in the future, I am wondering the same plus am at awe that Google Groups existed in 2003 (but doesn't mean I still feel the same about Google tho).
