I have throughly investigated this and it seems there is
no way to paste the value "4-6618" (without the quotes)
from the clipboard without Excel stupidly turning it into
a Date. In my mind this make Excel the stupidest program
on the planet. I'll be happy to be proven wrong, Excel has
so many other things going for it. (Note: Setting Cells
Number property as Text beforehand doesn't help.)

Tim, I was able to perform this using Excel 2000 by
setting the cell format to Text. What version of Excel
are you trying to accomplish this with?

It behaves this way in 2002. April 1, 6618 ... right.
Talk about forward thinking ...

I actually didn't find a practical solution other than
pasting to the formula bar forcing the single quote.
There's got to be a better way. Paste special does
nothing helpful either.

Tim,

I tried your problem and as Ed Jones said below,
formatting the cell as "Text" and then pasting from the
clipboard will work, at least in Excel 2000. It seems the
question remains, what version of Excel are you using?

I was able to copy and paste from inside the application,
if the cell was formatted in advance. However, coming
from the clipboard (Copying the information in word) then
pasting. I had the same problem as Tim. Excel 2002 SP1

I had the same problem with Excel 2002 SP1. The only way
around I found was the solution someone else mentioned,
copy directly into the formula bar and add the single
quote in front.

Kinda silly if you ask me. I just upgraded to 2002 this
afternoon and I use this format alot. I may be in for
some trouble.

I am new at the messageboard, so sorry I did not post it to the
messageboard. Here it is

Tim

Hi, if you know how to use Excel, it is not stupid. Neither are you. Put
the cursor on to cell A1. Go into the MENU at the top then go into CELLs.
Go down to Category CUSTOM enter the following :

#-####

In cell A1 enter the numbers 46664 and you see the result- 4-6664. This is
a format and you can format any number of cells by using the icon FORMAT
PAINTER.

Hope it works for you. Write to me at dan...@netvision.net.il and tell me.

Thanks

Brian

Hi Tim

I am determined to prove you wrong. Why don't you attach about 5 lines of
your HTML table and let me look at it.

Hey Tim

I'm waiting for your sample table.

In the meantime, I copy and pasted a table I made up and it copies onto an
Excel worksheet with one proviso: that the extension number must not be in
the first column. I don't know what you need to do with the table once it
is in Excel.
My example was

Name Extension
Brian 4-66401
Tim 4-12345
Art 4-65432

and there was no problem, as I said. If the extension numbers would appear
before the name there would be a problem. So make sure the names come
first.

Regards

Brian

Tim is actually a genius. He is a very smart man who was ahead of his time. Excel is in fact the stupidest program on the planet. Props to Tim, a gentleman and a scholar, for seeing this before any of his peers. Hats off to you Tim!
